What is email to SMS

Email to SMS is a basic, practical SMS service that allows businesses to send an SMS message from any email client, anywhere in the world, with no additional software required.

Using the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and our SMS API (application program interface), emails sent from Email to SMS enabled addresses are converted into an SMS format when they are passed through our Email to SMS gateway using the recipient’s phone number.

How do you send an email as a text

1. Before signing up with an account, make sure you have 2 – 3 emails on hand, as well as 2 -3 mobile numbers to test email to SMS. They can be yours, or your colleagues but you must be able to access to read/to confirm/to send from them easily.

3. For the rest of this example, we’ll be using MessageMedia platform to show you how to enable the Email to SMS function. However, when signing up with your SMS provider of choice, you should ask exact details on how to enable it yourself.

4. Make sure that when the function is enabled, you request that the emails you have collected for testing, or ones that you want to use are added to the allowed email addresses and domain listing under the function within the portal. You can check this by entering into the portal, and navigating to the Email to SMS page under Configuration under the left-hand vertical navigation.

5. Once you click add, a pop-up form should come up allowing you to add registered emails and domains. Now, you’re ready to send! Open your email, and start to compose your SMS.


  • Make sure that you use {end sms} or {end} at the end of your SMS message, otherwise, your email signatures will be sent in the SMS.
  • You can write your message in the subject line of the email or in the body of the email. If you write the entire message in the subject line, make sure to add {end sms} or {end} at the end of your subject line, or at the top of the body email.
  1. Are you ready to send? Now it’s time to enter your sender’s mobile phone number into the To: or CC: email boxes, the same way you do when sending an email. We recommend testing this by first using your own mobile number.
  • If you live in Australia, make sure you to add +61 at the beginning of the number, and eliminate the beginning 0. For example, if your number is 0418719130 – change it to: 61418719130. 
  • If sending from a landline, make sure to include the area code.  For example, if you were in NSW, and the number is 1234 5678, you would change it to 02 1234 5678. 
  1. Depending on your provider, they will supply you with a gateway address that comes after the number to complete the full email address.
  • For example, MessageMedia’s is . Therefore, putting it all together, your recipient’s new email address becomes: 
  1. Is it time to hit send first? If you’re sending to more than one person’s mobile add these in by first converting them to the address above. Delineate between addresses by separating each with a semi colon (;). Now you’re ready to hit send!
  1. Give it a few seconds, and check that the message was delivered correctly to the number. 
  2. What happens if your recipient tries texting back? Try doing it yourself. All replies will be delivered to your portal’s inbox, and can easily be replied to there.

Further tips, future reading

  • Standard SMS messages are character-limited, so ensure your character count is 160 characters or less including the subject and/or body text. We recommend you use the word count feature available in most email packages to check the length of your message. (In Outlook this can be found in the Tools dropdown menu.) 
  • Long messages (more than 160 characters) are possible, but remember that each standard SMS is worth one credit. In this instance, the messages are concatenated (or strung together) and sent as one message to the mobile phone. Our default limit is set to 3 SMS credits, but you can change this within our Hub.
  • If you are sending a text message from an email inbox to landline and you are asking the message recipient to call a number, you will need to put spaces between each of the numbers in your written message: for example, 0 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 – this will ensure the number is read out as individual digits as opposed to a whole number (212,345,678).
