MessageMedia was excited to show our support by having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johnnyhumphrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Johnny Humphrey<\/a>, Director of Inclusivity Services, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtqcolorado.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center on Colfax<\/a> to speak on the importance of the day and how we can all be allies to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What causes homophobia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The term homophobia means an aversion or irrational fear to gay and lesbian people and stems from our belief in heteronormativity. Heteronormativity assumes that everyone\u2019s sexual orientation is heterosexual (sex attraction is between a man and woman). It also assumes that this is preferable and supreme to all other sexualities and orientations. Johnny reassures us that this is an issue everyone struggles with and needs to unlearn. He points to a simple example of seeing a man wearing a wedding ring and assuming his partner is a woman. He invites everyone to stop making assumptions and to allow people to be their authentic selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why gender pronouns matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender pronouns are personal identifiers. For example, \u2018his, he, him\u2019 or \u2018they, them, their\u2019. They are essential to those whose visible gender identity may not align with who they choose to be. By knowing and using someone\u2019s preferred pronoun in the workplace, we can create inclusive and safe spaces that meet everyone\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"588\" src=\"https:\/\/messagemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gender_pronouns-1024x588.png\" alt=\"An infographic table showing a list of pronouns\" class=\"wp-image-17574\" style=\"width:768px;height:441px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/messagemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gender_pronouns-1024x588.png 1024w, https:\/\/messagemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gender_pronouns-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/messagemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gender_pronouns-768x441.png 768w, https:\/\/messagemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gender_pronouns.png 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#bbbbbb\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Source:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/image-service.usw2.wp-prod-us.cultureamp-cdn.com\/7JUCm1MpiiD45D_zvFhNIk7hBMc=\/1440x0\/cultureampcom\/production\/wordpress-images\/4\/2019\/06\/img-362.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Culture Amp<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>By not using a pronoun \u2014 or by using the wrong pronoun \u2014 we are telling the individual:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We know them better than they know themselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That their identity isn\u2019t real and should not be acknowledged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being who you are is inconvenient to me<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I am not an ally or friend, someone you can trust, or someone who respects you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why use inclusive language plus best practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several LGTIQA+ inclusive language practices we can start to use to make our colleagues feel more supported and included in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Homosexual<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is the term dehumanising, but the term also connotes a negative medical diagnosis. In fact, May 17th was picked to celebrate IDAHOBIT as this was the day that the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality as a mental disorder. Instead, Johnny suggests using the word gays and lesbians as in &#8220;We want to support our gay and lesbian colleagues in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Both genders or opposite genders<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference is slight but makes a huge impact. By using \u2018both\u2019 or \u2018opposite\u2019, we are simply implying that there are only two genders: male and female. This excludes those who identify as non-binary or gender-neutral. Instead, you can use \u2018all genders\u2019 such as &#8220;Sports aren\u2019t a boys thing, they\u2019re for all genders.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to be an LGBTIQ+ ally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being an ally is easier than you think but requires considerable effort on your part. You\u2019re not expected to be an expert. Be humble about any errors and be curious enough to learn from them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is up to you to learn. Take the initiative to learn about LGBTIQ+ experiences, history and rights. Do not rely on a community member to educate you instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support and listen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t make assumptions. Every community member\u2019s experience is different. Understanding one\u2019s experience may not be akin to another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask open-ended questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share your pronouns and invite others to share theirs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do our LGBTIQ+ colleagues think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnny moderated a panel of MessageMedia employees on their opinions and experiences at work and as part of the LGBTIQ+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are your thoughts on LGBTIQ+ acceptance in Australia?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I thought about the marriage equality debate from a few years ago. The true colours of some people in Australia really came out during that vote. I do live in a bubble in Melbourne, surrounded by other people in my community. Australia has made great strides in accepting LGTBIQA+ acceptance, but improvements can always be made.<\/p>\n<cite>Mitchell Schierhuber<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was quite confronting to have people debate your sexuality.<\/p>\n<cite>Josh Jackson<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I wasn\u2019t here for the plebiscite, but I&#8217;ve heard about it and it sounds traumatic having a public debate about whether it\u2019s okay to be you. Now that we can get married, the assumption is that everything\u2019s okay, and we should be happy with the rights we have been granted. Things are a lot better than they used to be, but there are definitely still improvements and changes that would make our lives even better.<\/p>\n<cite>James Fennell<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is your experience as an \u2018out\u2019 person at MessageMedia?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I haven\u2019t been here long, but it\u2019s great. So many times, people simply assume my partner is a woman.<\/p>\n<cite>Josh Jackson<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Be careful about your language.<\/p>\n<cite>James Fennell<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts, further reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a workplace or otherwise, creating more supportive and inclusive spaces where more people feel welcomed and allowed to be their true selves can benefit more than the LGBTIQ+ community, such as those who are gender diverse or people with disabilities.
